This laconism came from the lips of a young man who was walking along the Levee of New Orleans. Just before giving utterance to it he had made a sudden stop, facing a dead wall, enlivened, however, by a large poster, on which were printed in conspicuous letters, the words.

I actually thought this would be a Victorian era "romance" novel. But it was actually an action-packed revolutionary tale that kept me second-guessing what would happen next! It was a pleasant surprise, and I highly recommend it. There was one part where someone was killed in a particularly gruesome way, but that was almost at the very end and the person actually kinda deserved it. Other than that, I can say that it was as wordy and superfluous as one can expect with pieces from its time. But I actually didn't mind that at all! And that is the ultimate compliment I can give the authors of this time period... I didn't mind the wordiness because I was so enthralled by the story!Product details

The Free Lances A Romance of the Mexican Valley Classic Reprint 9781332809158 Mayne Reid Books Reviews
An interesting story. Contains beautiful ladies, gallant soldiers, faithful servants, a morally twisted hunchback, and nefarious villains--all against the backdrop of a fight for "liberty and country" in Mexico. The actual telling of the story was at times a bit too wordy for my taste, but I enjoyed reading it nonetheless.
The book started out a little boring but it got somewhat interesting toward the middle. I really would not recommend it to anyone.
